Our History

WE MEASURE OVER 70 YEARS OF SUCCESS.

The MasTec story begins in 1929, when two unemployed carpenters envisioned a construction company that would serve the growing telecommunications and civil construction market in Florida. This small company, called Burnup & Sims, grew into a construction powerhouse. They built telephone networks throughout the United States, as well as in the Middle East and the Pacific Islands. They laid the first underwater telephone cable from Florida to Puerto Rico, and they also built nearly one-fourth of the cable television systems in the U.S.

But that success is only half our story. In 1969, an underground utility construction firm called Church & Tower recruited a Cuban immigrant named Jorge Mas Canosa. Mr. Canosa brought discipline, focus and leadership to the organization. He believed that anyone could succeed by capitalizing on opportunities, and he instilled that idea throughout the company. He saw the potential in Florida’s need for telecommunications infrastructure and started building that area of the business.

This business venture was so successful that in 1971, Mr. Mas Canosa bought Church & Tower. He raised his three sons with these same ideals about personal responsibility and innovation. Eventually he turned over control of the company to his oldest son, Jorge Mas. As the company continued to utilize innovative methods, they continued to grow and succeed. They also looked to expand their markets and their geographic reach.

In 1994, through a reverse acquisition Church & Towers was acquired by publicly traded Burnup & Sims . The new organization emerged as MasTec.

Today, MasTec is continuing to grow by acquiring companies that fit with our core expertise – underground and aerial infrastructure development. By folding companies under the MasTec name and hiring personnel with specialized expertise, we continue to broaden our capabilities and geographic reach to serve the utility companies and communications businesses, and the federal government with underground and aerial construction, design and engineering, and equipment installation services.
